On October 1, 1951, our founder, Joseph J. Kerola, along with his son, John J., opened the first office of Joseph J. Kerola Motor Express in Masury, Ohio. It became the Pennsylvania-Indiana-Illinois Motor Express after two years of expansion ( better known throughout the industry as P.I. & I.).
George Gerlach, now deceased, had over 40 years of distinguished and dedicated service with P.I. & I. He joined the company as a driver shortly after it's inception, moving on to become the operations manager. Throughout his career, he was an integral of the company, helping build P.I. & I. into what it is today.
Our origins included the transportation of cattle, machinery and oil products. Today P.I. & I. continues serving an "expanded" mid-west area, hauling plate, coil, pipe and refractory products. All aspects of the great American steel industry tradition are catered to, specializing in both small to large companies. From one load to an entire barge, we meet our customers needs.
As a family owned and operated company, we take great pride in the fact that P.I. & I. Motor Express has demonstrated over 50 years of professionalism, experience, and dependability. Our commitment to quality and consistency is apparent in our equipment. With an excellent maintenance program, a safe and efficient operation is assured.
With terminals and offices located in the major steel centers, P.I. & I. easily serves the industrial heart of our great country. State of the art technology integrates electronic dispatching, EDI billing and maintenance tracking. These cutting edge features allow us to efficiently manage daily operations. Operating under both common and contract authority enables us to tailor services specifically to our customers needs.
The year 1996 held a very sad moment in our history. John J. Kerola passed away. His dedication to family, business, and the community will always be remembered. He is greatly missed, but we know he is still with us, guiding by the lessons he taught through his words and actions.
It is with the principles and dedication of our founders, that we, Joseph J. and William J., third generation Kerola's, continue to maintain such a high quality operation.
As a symbol of P.I. & I.'s continuing commitment to our friends and associates, we are constantly expanding and striving to improve. A second terminal was added November 1986 in Gary, Indiana. This terminal is located at 7000 Chicago Avenue. It consists of 14 acres of land with both office and maintenance facilities. With this location we have made a firm commitment to the Chicago market.
The P.I. & I. family continues to grow with the purchase of Bob's Truck Service, located in Middletown, Ohio. Bob's Truck Service, founded in 1948 by Mr. Bob Wise,
has an outstanding reputation in the trucking industry. This addition established us as one of the largest trucking companies servicing Ohio. Combining over 100 years of dedication, provides broader service to our customers and markets.
Another block in the wall was added with further expansion into southern Ohio. In March 1998, opportunity knocked again, allowing us to acquire the asset of Grant Trucking. Grant was another icon in trucking history, having been in business 63 years. Their location in Oak Hill, Ohio opened new markets in refractory products. With key personnel remaining with us, the transition was smooth.
With the purchase of a twelve acre facility off of highway 70 in Granite City, Illinois. A fleet purchase was made along with securing several talented trucking professionals. They carry not only P.I. & I.'s dedication, but our reputation and resources into the St. Louis market.
Along with the additions of Gary, IN; Middletown, OH; Oak Hill, OH; and Granite City, IL; we also have three additional company offices: Detroit, MI; Martins Ferry, OH; and Birmingham, AL. Together with ten agencies, P.I. & I. offers a long established history of service. Our heart is the men and women in our work force, many of whom have 5, 10, and 20 plus years of service.
